It was a certainty: Zeno Debast would play his last season in the RSC Anderlecht jersey, if all went well. And everything is going very well: the Red Devil has reached a level alongside Jan Vertonghen, Anderlecht is playing for the title, and Debast’s market value has climbed month after month.
Earlier this week, we reported Juventus’ interest in the young central defender from Sporting Anderlecht. But one thing remained clear: Sporting Portugal had a hand in this matter. And it is now done: Zeno Debast should join the Portuguese Liga.
A Bola , the leading Portuguese media outlet, announced this Thursday on the front page: Sporting Lisbon and RSC Anderlecht would be very close to having found a complete agreement regarding the transfer of Zeno Debast. For more than a month already, the rumor has been circulating; Sporting would now have come closer to the conditions requested by Anderlecht.
Debast soon to be valued at 80 million?
According to the Portuguese media, Debast should commit to Sporting for 5 seasons, for an amount estimated between 16 and 18 million euros. This would make the Belgian the most expensive defender in the club’s history. This 5-season contract would include a very high release clause, which A Bola estimates at around 80 million.
Debast will therefore a priori be the first reinforcement of Ruben Amorim, the coach of the Lisbon club, for the 2024-2025 season. A transfer which corresponds, specifies A Bola, to the style of the coach, even if Zeno Debast will have to get used to a 3-man defense, usually favored by Amorim.
By settling the deal before Euro 2024, Sporting Portugal avoids a possible increase in the value of the defender who should be taken over by Domenico Tedesco and could even apply for a starting place. But Anderlecht did not have a lot of room for maneuver, since Debast reaches the end of his contract in 2025. What’s more, waiting for the return of the Euro to receive the amount promised for Debast would also have meant delaying the start of the transfer window, which which Jesper Fredberg may wish to avoid.
