Corinthians , coached by Argentine Ramón Díaz, defeated Bragantino on penalties 5-4 on Tuesday and qualified for the quarter-finals of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana after losing 2-1 in regular time. Since the score of the first leg was reversed, they had to decide from the 12 steps.
Corinthians, who narrowly missed out on qualification, will face the team that won the match between Brazilian side Fortaleza and Rosario Central of Argentina on September 18.
The São Paulo team, with the support of its fans, went on the attack and pressed until the Argentine Garro scored the first goal in the 23rd minute with a shot from outside the area, which bounced off one of the defenders before going in. At the start of the second half, Bragantino, led by the Portuguese Pedro Caixinha, subjected the rival to a real bombardment and, after a couple of scares for the host, Eduardo Sasha tied the game from outside the area.

Four minutes later, with the Corinthians defence melted by the attacks, Luan Cândido put the visitors ahead with a header into the top corner, which goalkeeper Hugo Souza was unable to stop. Although Corinthians reacted in the last five minutes to try to save face, the match went to penalties.
The São Paulo team, led by Ramón Díaz, who is so closely associated with River Plate, came into the match encouraged by their 2-1 win over Bragantino last week, with goals from Giovane and Talles Magno. It was the first victory for the São Paulo team after five draws, although at the weekend they drew 0-0 with Fluminense in the Brasileirao, where they are in the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Bragantino was dragging the defeat in the first leg, as well as a weak performance in the last disputes in the domestic tournament, where it has accumulated one victory, two draws and three defeats in the last six matches and occupies the twelfth position.
