The Generalitat has announced that it plans to put out to tender as a dry dock the protected interior dock of the western breakwater of the Port of Torrevieja, which will serve the city’s three marinas and more than 2,000 berthing points.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón confirmed this initiative, which represents the second attempt by the regional administration to take advantage of the 44,000 m² esplanade and its adjacent waters after a similar attempt by the Consell del Botànic did not materialize in 2021.
Originally built in 2007 to house the fishing fleet and a fish market, the Muelle de la Sal area will now serve small and medium-sized vessels, boosting the local nautical leisure industry. Companies that operate in the Real Club Náutico y Marina Internacional will be able to bid for space in better-equipped facilities to expand their boat maintenance services.
The delimitation of port areas carried out by the Generalitat in 2018 excluded dockyard activities in Marina Salinas and the Real Club Náutico in their current locations. Meanwhile, the City Council has been authorized to use 10,000 m² of the Marina Internacional shipyard for an open-air auditorium. This space will host the International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition as part of the Eras de la Sal rehabilitation project.
The existing slipway concession in Marina Internacional, in force since 2017, has been extended annually. However, the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, has informed the City Council that a formal administrative concession will be granted at the beginning of 2025.
Plans for a new perimeter wall around the Salt Ages were scrapped due to high costs and the likelihood of demolition. Security issues at the site remain under scrutiny, particularly after recent criminal incidents. As part of the rehabilitation project, the Salinas Business Group building will be demolished to resolve long-standing safety issues.
