Real Madrid won the Madrid derby 1-2 in the first match of 2025. Below are my thoughts and opinions on the match.
Misa started in goal. Shei and Olga on the wings, with Lakrar and Méndez as the central duo, formed the defense. It was a 4-4-2 with Toletti and Leupolz in the center, and Linda and Angeldahl on the wings. Weir and Bruun led the line.
Although the lineup was the same as against Chelsea at home, the game did not go like Chelsea’s. There was no desire to put pressure on Atleti’s part and Real Madrid’s right was cut off in transitions.
Most of the opportunities came from the left side led by Linda Caicedo. The duo of Caicedo and Weir kept the attack alive as they constantly combined to get the ball into the Atleti penalty area. For the most part, the idea was to get the ball to Bruun, either through a Weir or Linda cross inside, but the ball never reached the striker, missing by an inch each time.
Atleti’s attacks started in the transitions and ended mostly on their right wing, where Ajibade acted. Olga had problems facing Ajibade, but it was always solved by Caicedo retreating or Lakrar clearing him. As time went on, Olga got more into the rhythm and her defense became more stable.
Finally, at the end of the first half, Las Blancas got the goal.
- 44′: GOAL (0-1) by Linda Caicedo: The action began with the recovery of Toletti on the halfway line, Weir caught it and sent it forward to Linda who was open on the left side and took the ball to the edge of the area from where she shot.
The second half was not much different from the first. Las Blancas managed to double the lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
53′: GOAL (0-2): Linda Caicedo’s pass that was intended for Weir at the near post put Gaby García’s leg in the net. The goal comes from Gaby’s own goal.
65′: GOAL (1-2) by Silvia Lloris: Lloris tried his luck from a distance. When his shot hit the wood, it curved inward. He didn’t give Misa much time to clean it up in time. The goal was awarded as an own goal to Misa even though she touched the ball only after it had crossed the goal line.
Athenea came on for the final 14 minutes in place of Angeldahl. With two wingers present on the field, the right back was now more self-sufficient. There were a few chances started by Athenea that ended up going wide, but it was Atleti who controlled the game for the last 10 minutes or so. Despite all their efforts to equalize, Las Blancas managed to maintain the 1-2 lead.
The first victory in a Madrid derby in two years and the first time there was no clean sheet in a derby win. A good start to 2025, by the way!
