Real Madrid has officially announced the start of the election process for its presidency, scheduled for 2025. The decision was confirmed through a statement from the club.
Real Madrid Official Statement
“The president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, calls the meeting of the club’s Board of Directors on January 7, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., in order to begin the process of electing the president and board of directors for the next four years .”
This fact advances the electoral process by three months, since the last call occurred in April 2021. Pérez, who has overseen an era of notable success, will stand for re-election.
The electoral process
According to article 38, section b of the Real Madrid statutes, the club’s Board of Directors must approve the start of the electoral process. Once approved, the decision will be transferred to the Electoral Board to begin the formal process.
In previous elections, the process was quick. During the 2021 elections, candidates had 13 days (April 1 to 13) to present their candidacy. Florentino Pérez, who ran unopposed, was re-elected without opposition.
Florentino Pérez’s Presidency
Since beginning his second term as president in 2009, Pérez has been unchallenged in subsequent elections in 2013, 2017 and 2021. His tenure has been defined by unparalleled achievements, including multiple Champions League titles, high-profile signings and the remodeling of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
Requirements to run for president
Candidates who want to challenge Pérez must meet strict eligibility criteria, including:
- be spanish
- Be of legal age and have the capacity to act
- Be up to date with membership dues.
- Maintain uninterrupted membership for at least 20 years.
- Not be subject to any disqualifying sanction
- Avoid conflicting roles in football
- Contribution of bank guarantee of 15% of the club’s budget, backed by personal assets
These requirements, particularly financial collateral, have historically limited the pool of candidates.
What’s next?
The meeting on January 7 will officially begin the electoral process. With Perez expected to seek another term, attention will likely focus on whether rivals emerge. Given his dominance in previous elections and the success of the club under his leadership, the next process will likely be similar to past elections, with Pérez continuing as Real Madrid’s unopposed figurehead.
