Real Madrid forward Vinícius Jr. has been called to testify as a victim in the ongoing investigation into racist insults directed at him during the October 2023 Clásico match at the Montjuïc Stadium. The hearing, scheduled for January 23, will be held via videoconference.
The case revolves around two Barcelona fans identified by the Mossos d’Esquadra as authors of racist chants against the Brazilian player. The investigation, led by Judge Carmen García of the 18th Investigative Court of Barcelona, is based on evidence collected in images of the stadium and witness accounts.
The two fans, previously summoned to testify as defendants, denied their involvement in the racist chants despite being named in the Mossos d’Esquadra report. The report implicates three people in total, one of whom is a minor and will be investigated separately in juvenile court.
Vinícius was offered the opportunity to join the case as a victim, a role he has accepted. In parallel with his testimony, several entities are actively participating in the proceedings, including the Barcelona Hate Crimes Prosecutor’s Office, LaLiga and Real Madrid.
This is not the first time that Vinícius has faced racial abuse on the pitch, nor is it his first participation in legal action to combat these types of incidents. The Brazilian has become a leading voice against racism in football and uses his platform to demand accountability and systemic change.
In June 2023, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for racially insulting Vinícius during a match at the Mestalla Stadium. That case marked a milestone in holding fans accountable for discriminatory behavior, setting a precedent for current research.
