Real Madrid lost 5-0 in the Spanish Women’s Super Cup final against Barcelona. Below are my thoughts and opinions on the match.
Misa started in goal. Antonia started as RB and Olga as LB. Lakrar and Méndez were part of the CB duo. In the midfield were Toletti, Weir and Angeldahl, with Redondo, Bruun and Caicedo in the front line. It was a 4-4-2 with Redondo and Linda on the wings, and Bruun and Weir leading the line.
The expected disarray on the right side actually translated into defending the left side. With Linda on the right side and Redondo on the left side, Olga did not have the support of her winger in defense. Ona Batlle and Caroline Graham Hansen were destroying Madrid’s left flank, where most of their goals came from.
blaugranas They rarely attacked from the left side. Antonia had problems in defense at times but her shielding of the ball won the duels against Pina. Linda Caicedo did not receive support in some cases when she climbed alone. Toletti was the one who would have to come help after Linda was left alone for some time. The action would calm down until Linda received help. It was clear from the beginning that Antonia was not the type of player for this match and although she showed a decent defensive performance, in attack she was non-existent.
Alberto Toril In the press conference after the game he had a question about the situation on the left:
“I think about winning, I think about Alba scoring, she had chances. The players have to take on the challenge, [Barça] They have a lot of talent, they are the best in the world and it is very complicated. If you block the right, they come out from the left…”
To some extent he is right, at least in the last part. However, Barça insisted on passing on the right with Ona and CGH and rarely had difficulty passing. Alba Redondo was never placed on the wing from the start of a match, and it was natural to expect her to be unprepared for the task of defending the left side. Sandie Toletti was always present and made up for many holes, especially in defense inside the penalty area.
These are some of the biggest mistakes of the Real Madrid defense against Barça’s goals.
- On the second goal, CGH’s pass reaches Ona smoothly as she beats Olga, who was out of rhythm the entire game. She found Pajor in front of the goal, who was apparently being marked by both CBs, but to no avail.
- The third goal was from a corner. The infamous set piece by the Las Blancas defense. The corner was taken by CGH and sent to the near post. Pajor followed the trajectory of the ball and advanced to the near post to reach it. Toletti marked it, but when the ball found Pajor, Bruun and Toletti had a slight miscommunication. In the end, Pajor jumped higher and put the ball behind the Madrid defense into the goal.
- The fifth goal was another failed attempt to defend a corner kick. Mapi León took the corner to the near post which was an easy clearance for Toletti, but the ball found Mapi again near the corner flag. This time he sent it to the far post, Pajor headed it, Misa saved, but Alexia was there to grab the rebound.
Another missed opportunity for a trophy, but this final was a much clearer dominance of one team than the 2023 cup final at the same venue. Late and unnecessary substitutions continue, as well as unnecessary rotation of the starting eleven. Las Blancas has not scored against Barcelona since the Super Cup semi-final match in January 2023.
