In the last episode of The Real Deal (the analysis part of the manager of Madrid), we accompany each other Jarod HéctorA Real Madrid and Podcast for the real ring, to review the development of players at Real Madrid.
For many years, the trend in Real Madrid has involved storing generational talents and discovering what to do with them later. The result is that generational players obtain a very altered development and professional trajectories that do not meet their potential. The examples of previous years include types such as ISCO, Ceballos, Kovacic or even Odegaard: if they were world class or not, they were not signed taking into account specific pathways. They were allowed to sink or swim.
The result is the generational players that stagnate. An example is Aurelien Tchouameni. It has its defects: it loses confidence quickly, and the team has not been great with him in DM with all his strength. However, he was an defender of the 99th percentile before coming. While you need consistency to generate trust, you have the tools to be a positive offensive player. 2022-23 was supposed to be a negative year, it did not start with a new trend with Tchouameni. He has also played well for France. But in Real Madrid, he obtains very little direction inside or out of possession, and has not been able to prosper in this environment.
Another example of a player who does not have a clear development route is Arda Gular. Well, he obtained 444 minutes in all competitions last season, and that has increased in a healthy way 835 minutes this season in the middle. But he needs a specific role: either as a generational creator or creative and liar games. Sometimes it comes in a deeper playing paper, sometimes it comes in a ball more out of the Brahim Díaz/Rodrygo Goes ball and the ball does not flow through it. He needs dominant repetitions of the ball as the Central Game Creator.
Every time Eduardo Camavinga has a bad game in possession, it is easy to remember how little consistency has also had in his role. He has had great games in possession, and an appearance of consistency in the role would have helped him a lot, although that has been worsened by his own injuries. That leads us to a deeper question: can this break that we want in possession even to be trained?
Whether the team can be better trained in the ball or not, a group of elite defensive talents should not be hit in the center of the field as often as they have been. Camavinga and Tchouameni should be in much better positions to win defensive duels, instead of plugging gaps due to a total lack of defensive cohesion.
With Raul Asencio: if the club knows that they need another return center, less than the club sees something that does not scare him, there should be no cursed time giving him repetitions in the return center.
