Open thread: January 12, 2025

The Open Thread/Daily Merengue is a place where you can discuss any topic related to football. Feel free to discuss the topics presented here or start your own discussions! The open thread will be posted every day by one of the mods you’d have a movie night with: Valyrian Steel, Felipejack, Kung_Fu_Zizou (AKA automobile), Juninho and, of course… Sincerely.

The Classic is upon us!

So the Royal Whites find themselves in another final! Interestingly, a mid-season one, perhaps for many clubs, but Los Blancos have found themselves in this position quite often, haven’t they?

Who could be a better opponent for an interesting and eventful final than bitter rivals Barcelona? The last time the two teams met, Madrid lost badly at the Bernabéu. That was an informed Barcelona and a Madrid that was anything but hot. This time the roles seem reversed. Real Madrid are at least in better shape than then (in my opinion, nothing surprising, but they are better now), while Barcelona are suffering more. However, this is a matchup where recent form often carries less weight. Hopefully, Real Madrid’s ongoing class will have an impact on the game.

Well, I mean, that’s a state of mind too…
