Global Scenario of the Sports City: the 2025 Walking Football World Cup lands in Torrevieja

More than 45 nations, with 120 teams, from around the world have already officially registered for the Walking Football World Cup of Nations that will be held in the Sports City of Torrevieja next October 2025.

The Cup will be the largest walking football event ever held in Spain and will attract thousands of visitors to the city. The event will generate more than 2 million euros for the area, which will fill hotels, restaurants and bars.

Diana Box Alonso, Sports Councilor of Torrevieja, states: “The city council firmly supports and celebrates this important international event that will arrive in Torrevieja in 2025. Our city is the perfect destination to celebrate the World Cup with its extraordinary sports. facilities and our experience in hosting large international events and tournaments. “We are very excited to help organize this event.”

Tournament co-director Mark Kavanagh says: “This is a huge boost for the city and an opportunity for us to showcase Torrevieja Sports City as a premium venue for competitive sport. Torrevieja has a lot to offer, we hope this will generate many more visits and even more sporting events for many years to come.”

The contest will take place from October 21 to 24.th and from the 28thth to 31street with different age groups playing over the two weeks. Gala dinners are being organized to present the prizes to the winners. Teams will include men over 50, 60 and 70 years old, and women over 40, 50 and 60 years old.

Organizers also welcome the announcement of tournament sponsor Desire Properties. The owner of the company on the Costa Blanca, Krisztian, says:

“We are beyond excited to announce that Desire Properties will be the main sponsor of the 2025 World Walking Football Championship at the Ciudad Deportiva de Torrevieja!

“This incredible event will bring together teams from countries around the world in six different gender and age categories. As main sponsor, it is an honor and a great responsibility to support both the Spanish team and the organizing committee in creating a competition where fair play and the joy of football at any age are the top priorities.”

Other sponsors include ‘Just 4 Keepers’, who will provide a free pair of specially designed Astro Turf goalkeeper gloves to each team registered as the official glove and kit supplier of WNC Spain 2025.

The bid to host the games in Spain was won by two enthusiastic expatriates originally from the UK but living on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol who were determined to bring the games to Spain after the inaugural games in 2023 in the UK. United when England won the over 50 and 60 cups, leaving Spain fourth overall.

Mark Kavanagh, 59, and Mark Coleman, 59, play and coach Walking Football and have both coached at semi-professional and professional level with youth teams and at professional academic level in the UK.

The event takes place every two years with the first taking place in the UK at St George’s Park in Burton on Trent.

The Spanish team will register teams of men over 50 and 60 years old and women over 40 and 50 years old.

Along with paddle tennis, Walking Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Organizer and activist Kavanagh Mark says: “This is a dream come true – we can’t believe we are bringing the World Nations Cup and over 45 countries to Torrevieja, here on the Costa Blanca. We simply love the game and wanted to bring the sport to as many people as possible; This puts us firmly on the map.”

Mark Kavanagh also joined the Torrevieja government team this week in Madrid for the formal launch of the tournament to industry professionals at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR).
