ELCHE AND THADER PLAYERS SUFFER RACIAL ABUSE ON THE WEEKEND
Former Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday defender Bambo Diaby has condemned the racist abuse directed at him during Elche’s Second Division match against Sporting Gijón. Calling the behavior “despicable,” the 27-year-old has called for “strong sanctions” against those responsible.
The incident occurred on Saturday at El Molinón, where Diaby, a substitute not used in the match, was subjected to racist insults by an individual in the stands. Despite not being on the pitch, Diaby faced the abuse with admirable composure and dignity, addressing the perpetrator directly. Footage from the stadium captured Diaby making a prayer gesture toward the stands while interacting with the individual.
Diaby reportedly alerted the referee about the incident, causing a brief stoppage in play. The former Barnsley and PNE player also highlighted the presence of children near the offender, emphasizing the wider impact of such behaviour. An official complaint was subsequently filed with the police and the Central Operational Unit has since confirmed the allegations.
On social media platform X, Diaby expressed his disappointment and wrote:
“Although they do not represent the @RealSporting fans, receiving racist insults in 2025 forces me to point out the culprits and demand strong sanctions. Thank you to my teammates, the club and all of you for your support and messages.”
Elche coach Eder Sarabia also referred to the incident during his post-match comments:
“One of the first things that must be eliminated from the world of football, sports and this society. We deeply appreciate you, Bambo. “We are fortunate to have someone like you on our team.”
CD PLAYER THADER KONE ALSO RACILY ABUSED
Meanwhile, CD Thader also issued a club statement condemning racism following their match against SC Torrevieja on Sunday. The ad says:
Thader Sports Club expresses its strongest rejection and condemnation of the racist insult, by a rival player, towards our player Kone during the disputed match today morning.
Today there was an unfortunate incident at our municipal field “Moi Gómez”… We had to see one of our players burst into tears after racist insults from an opposing player.
From the Thader Sports Club we trust that the relevant institutions will take measures to eradicate this type of improper actions in the times we live in.
Kone, this is your club, this is your home and Thader fans are your family. We are with you and we will always support you.
We will never forget the moment when you faced the situation, when the match was going to be suspended and when you yourself decided that the match should continue, when none of us had the strength to continue.
Kone, you are an example for all of us!!!!
These two incidents add to the current challenges football faces in eradicating racism from the sport. The brave responses from both Diaby and Kone have garnered widespread support, reinforcing the need for strong action to ensure football remains an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
