Raúl Asencio will make a moving homecoming on Sunday when Real Madrid take on UD Las Palmas. The young centre-back, who grew up in the Canary Islands and developed his talent in the Las Palmas youth academy, continues to leave his mark on Real Madrid. In a recent interview about Good Night and Good GoalsMiguel González, Asencio’s former coach in the Las Palmas youth academy, shared his knowledge about the player’s career, his potential and the challenges of being a rising star in the most demanding environment in football.
About entering the Real Madrid starting eleven
“You can say that there are times when it is fair or unfair (to be benched). “It is still in its formative stage,” said González. “You have to have patience and pace, and I think Ancelotti is doing very well. At Real Madrid everything is magnified, the positive and the negative. If I speak from the heart I tell you that Raúl must play every minute.”
Room for improvement
For González, Asencio’s path is far from complete. “He has tremendous room for improvement. It has been evolving and going through stages but there is still room for improvement. He is always well positioned, he has good movement,” González explained. “He plays that type of football similar to Sergio Ramos. Sometimes his bravery takes a toll on him, but he will continue to improve. It will, I’m sure. When I saw him at Castilla, little by little he became the leader of the team.”
Comparisons with Sergio Ramos
Inevitably, comparisons have been made between Asencio and Sergio Ramos, one of Real Madrid’s most iconic defenders. González admitted that while the comparison is discouraging, it is not unfounded. “The comparison scares me because there is a lot of pressure on someone who compares themselves to Sergio Ramos, but it is true that it is the profile he most resembles,” he said. “He is a temperamental guy, very committed, he is a leader and I think he can be captain of Real Madrid.”
Real Madrid fan since he was born
González also revealed Asencio’s lifelong dream of wearing the famous white jersey. “I was a Real Madrid fan from a very young age. There were other teammates who had very good talent, but it is true that he was very clear that he wanted to go far,” González said. “Real Madrid was interested from the beginning and both he and his family were clear that if Real Madrid came they would sign for Real Madrid. He has achieved it and still has the opportunity to improve.”
Trust in the club’s vision
According to González, both Ancelotti and the Real Madrid hierarchy have faith in Asencio’s potential. “I think Ancelotti and the club trust Raúl. He is calm and down to earth. He is aware that he has to deal with the players in front of him,” González remarked. “He is clear about it and will be patient. I think he will consolidate himself at Real Madrid.”
